Collection Information
- Descripton: The National Transportation Library is charged
with improving the availability of transportation-related information
needed by Federal, state, and local decision-makers. Its mission is
to increase timely access to the information that supports transportation
policy, research, operations, and technology transfer activities.
The NTL was established in 1998 through the Transportation Equity
Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and serves as a repository of materials
from public, academic and private organizations. To fulfill its mission,
the NTL provides a completely virtual environment that stimulates
library and information resource cooperation and preservation and
provides tools that support its mission. The NTL collection is entirely
available through the web. There is no paper collection or reading
room to visit. The collection is cataloged and online.
Besides the digital objects that the NTL provides on its website, the NTL's catalog also provides a portal to other select resources available on the web. Besides its collection, the NTL publishes TRIS Online which makes the Transportation Research Board's TRIS Database available on the web. NTL provides virtual reference through the Bureau of Transportation Statistics Answerline and the handling of thousands of email queries each month. Other tools provided are a browsable version of the Transportation Research Thesaurus, the hierarchical vocabulary maintained by the Transportation Research Board, as well as bibliographies, directories and related resources.
The NTL supports the interaction of all transportation libraries through support of its TLCAT union catalog, network development, resource sharing, and training opportunities.
